Light vehicles running on conventional gasoline are projected to remain the best-selling vehicle type in the United States in 2050, representing around 11.36 million sales. Gasoline vehicle sales are expected to decrease slowly between 2021 and 2050. By contrast, battery-electric vehicle sales are forecast to grow steadily, becoming the second most popular fuel type in the U.S. in 2022.
Global gasoline price inflation impacts the market
Plug-in electric vehicle sales reached an all-time high in the United States in 2022, boosted by increased battery-electric vehicle popularity. However, the American electric vehicle market is dependent on Tesla sales. In 2022, Tesla recorded over five times as many all-electric vehicle sales as Ford, which ranked second. This directly contrasts with the global BEV market, where the gap between Tesla and other automakers is not as steep.

The source provides the following supplementary information on its forecasting method: "The AEO2022 Reference case represents our assessment of how U.S. and world energy markets would operate through 2050. Our key assumptions in the Reference case provides a baseline for exploring long-term trends, based on current laws and regulations as of November 2021. The current laws and regulations included in the AEO and a paper addressing the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law are available on the AEO website.
We based the economic and demographic trends reflected in the Reference case on the current views of leading economic forecasters and demographers. For example, the Reference case projection assumes improvement in known energy production, delivery, and consumption technologies.
The Reference case serves as the benchmark to compare with alternative policy-based cases, so in general, it assumes that current laws and regulations that affect the energy sector, including laws that have end dates, remain unchanged throughout the projection period."
