Despite having been the incumbent government party in Denmark since 2019, the Social Democrats managed to increase their share of the votes in the 2022 parliamentary election. On the other hand, the support of the Liberal Party was almost halved. Moreover, the Social Liberal Party, which pulled its support for the government in parliament and ultimately forced the snap election, lost nearly five percent of their votes from 2019.
Originally, the next Danish parliamentary election was scheduled for 2023. However, in early October 2022, the Danish Prime Minister, Mette Fredriksen of the Social Democrats, called an election for November 1, 2022. Controversy had been mounting since Fredriksen and her government decided to cull the whole country's mink population in 2020 because of fears of a mutated variant of the coronavirus. Ultimately, the government's ally in parliament, the Social Liberal Alliance, threatened to hold a vote of no confidence if she did not call a snap election.
