Share of votes in the parliamentary election in Denmark 2022

In the 2022 parliamentary election in Denmark, held on November 1, the Social Democrats received the highest share of the votes, amounting to 27.6 percent. This means that the incumbent Prime Minister, Mette Fredriksen of the same party, will form a new government. However, as of November 8, it was still not clear whether she would opt for a cooperation with other left-leaning parties or seek cooperation with more center-oriented parties. The Liberal Party received the second highest share of votes.

Mink cause a snap election

Originally, the next Danish parliamentary election was scheduled for 2023. However, in early October 2022, the Danish Prime Minister, Mette Fredriksen of the Social Democrats, called an election for November 1, 2022. Controversy had been mounting since Fredriksen and her government decided to cull the whole country's mink population in 2020 because of fears of a mutated variant of the coronavirus. Ultimately, the government's ally in parliament, the Social Liberal Alliance, threatened to hold a vote of no confidence if she did not call a snap election.

Historically high share of women in parliament

The 2022 parliamentary election resulted in a record share of women in the Danish Parliament. Up until 2022, less than 40 percent of the parliamentarians were women. However, after that election, 44 percent of the elected MPs were women. All five Nordic countries have around 45 percent of women in their parliaments.
