Before 2022, the total number of asylums granted in Norway peaked in 2016, reaching over 12,000. This was the year after the high number of refugees from the Middle East arrived in Europe. Since then, the number has been significantly lower. However, in 2022, 33,500 refugees from Ukraine were granted protection in Norway following Russia's invasion of the country. In 2021, only 1,656 asylum applications were registered in Norway.
