Russian coal export volume in the EU 2021, by type
In 2021, Russia exported 48.75 million metric tons of coal to European Union (EU) countries. The largest share of the exports, or nearly 93 percent, was occupied by steam coal. Russia was the major import origin of coal in the EU, having supplied three times more than Australia, the second-leading coal importer to the EU in 2021. In the first 100 days of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, which began in February 2022, shipments to the EU represented 30 percent of Russia's coal exports.
