No presidential candidate obtained more than half of the ballots in the first round of the 2022 Brazilian elections, leading to a runoff elections between the two most voted for candidates: Lula da Silva and Jair Bolsonaro. Finally, Lula, the candidate of the Workers' Party (PT), was elected president in the elections held on October 30, 2022, obtaining 50.9 percent of all the valid votes cast. Despite being defeated, incumbent president Bolsonaro remarkably shortened the distance that separated him from his political oponent in the first round, as his share of votes grew from 43.2 to 49.1 percent.
