China maintains the largest distant-waters fishing fleet of any single country in the world. In 2023, the total fishing volume of China's distant-waters fishing fleet as declared by official Chinese sources amounted to approximately 2.32 million metric tons. The total capture volume in recent years has fluctuated around 2.0 and 2.3 million tons per year. According to the 14th Five Year Plan for Fishery Development published in January 2022, the capture volume is planned to be kept at around 2.3 million metric tons in the upcoming years.
