In 2022, the discount supermarket chain Aldi reported retail sales in the United States of approximately 40.2 billion U.S. dollars. Compared to 2019, that was an increase of over 29 percent.
Rise of discounters
The U.S. grocery discount scene has recently transformed into a market with a major presence of European discount supermarket chains such as Aldi and Lidl. Although it opened its first store in Iowa in 1976, Aldi has risen to prominence only in the past decade, when it more than doubled its number of stores in just over a decade, now covering most of the contiguous United States. If in 2011 there were 1,140 Aldi stores, by 2024 that figure had reached 2,356. Its sales have grown at significant rates in recent years, and are set to trail right behind the country's major supermarket chains.
Consumer behavior
As of 2024, 27 percent of respondents aged 30 to 49 years stated regularly shopping at Aldi, while among those between 18 and 29 years the share totaled 24 percent. Overall between 2021 and 2023, Aldi had shown a significant growth in the monthly foot traffic of its stores. Despite 2022 showing the most significant increase, with nearly all months featuring double digits, 2023 still had positive growth with September topping the list at close to 10 percent.

The Top 100 Retailers are ranked by 52/53-week annual retail sales. In almost all instances, sales used to rank companies are for retail activity in the United States only. To arrive at U.S. retail sales figures, a variety of estimation techniques are applied based on publicly disclosed information. For this reason, the figures presented do not always match the companies' official public filing reports. Company revenues from non-retailing operating segments are removed unless otherwise noted; system-wide sales are provided when the operation is a franchise. The rankings eliminate fuel sales at locations designated as having a gasoline/fueling station as its primary business.
