Cost of antidiabetics in Italy 2023, by type

From the year 2014 to 2023, the average cost of antidiabetic drugs in Italy increased by almost 0.59 euros, reaching 0.95 euros per DDD (daily defined dose) in 2023. Breaking down this figure by type of antidiabetic drug, the most expensive was degludec/liraglutide insulin, with an average cost of 4.4 euros per DDD. 

Consumption of antidiabetics

In recent years, the consumption rate of antidiabetics increased in Italy, growing from 62.3 DDD per 1,000 inhabitants per day in 2014 to 71.4 in 2023. Metformin was by far the most used antidiabetic drug in Italy, followed by dulaglutide and lispro insulin.

Regional differences

The prevalence of diabetes varies across Italy. In 2023, southern regions had the highest prevalence, with almost eight percent. Therefore, the per capita expenditure on antidiabetic drugs was higher in these regions, reaching almost 27 euros per capita in 2023, while the national average was roughly 24.6 euros.
