
Cost of antidiabetics in Italy 2014-2023
Between 2014 and 2023, the cost of antidiabetic drugs in daily defined doses (DDD) increased in Italy. According to the data, in 2014 the cost of antidiabetic drugs was around 0.59 euros per DDD, while by 2023 this cost had reached an average of 0.95 euros per DDD. Degludec/Liraglutide insulin was the most expensive type of antidiabetic drug in 2023, costing 4.4 euros per DDD. This figure shows the average cost of antidiabetics in Italy from 2014 to 2023.
Consumption of antidiabetics and revenue
The consumption rate of antidiabetics was 71.4 DDDs per 1,000 inhabitants in Italy in 2023, up from 62.3 DDDs in 2014. In 2022, metformin was the most consumed antidiabetic drug in Italy, with around 23.3 DDDs consumers every day per 1,000 inhabitants. As of 2024, the antidiabetic drugs industry is estimated to generate 890 million euros worth of revenue in Italy alone, and this figure is expected to grow to 1.22 billion euros by 2029. The largest annual revenue growth in Italy was reported in 2021, when the revenues saw an increase of nearly 15 percent.
Prevalence of diabetes
There were around 3.89 million people diagnosed with diabetes mellitus in Italy in 2022, up from 2.92 million in 2010. Over 1.53 million of those suffering from diabetes in 2022 were people aged 75 years and above. The regions with the highest prevalence of diabetes were Aosta Valley and Calabria, with nine and 7.1 percent of the population being diagnosed with diabetes mellitus as of 2022, respectively.
