About 61 percent of the total waste generated in the European Union was treated in recovery operations, with recycling accounting for over 40 percent. Incineration represented an additional 0.4 percent, while landfilling and other disposal methods made up over 38 percent of total waste treated in 2022. The construction sector was the largest source of waste generation in the European Union.
