In 2022, Ace Hardware, the US-based hardware retail cooperative operated 5,746 stores worldwide, making it the leading DIY retailer in terms of store count. Malaysia-based Mr DIY and the U.S. retailer Home Depot followed in the ranking with 2,413 and 2,332 stores, respectively. In that year, only one DIY retailer from Europe, Groupe Adeo, passed the one-thousand-store mark.

In 2022, the source revised their methodology and introduced a new classification model - the retail market was divided into a DIY and a home improvement market. The aim of the reclassification is to improve the comparability of the different national markets, as the assortments sold by the retailers and market structures differ slightly to strongly.
