When surveyed in late August 2022, Canadians most likely to support legislation restricting access to abortion were also the least likely to contribute more in income taxes to help improve the situation for single parents. For example, 58 percent of those in favor of restricting access to abortion were willing to pay one or two percent more in income taxes to fund programs to support the children of single mothers, compared to 72 percent of those in favor of a law guaranteeing access to abortion. In addition, only 20 percent of those who wanted to restrict abortion supported making contraception available to everyone.
This is consistent with the United States, where states that ban abortion have some of the weakest social safety nets in the country.
