In 2022, the planted area dedicated to panela or unrefined whole cane sugar in Colombia was of about 206,427 hectares. As for harvested area, the South American country reported 170,464 hectares. This represented a decrease of about 0.17 percent for planted area and 0.42 percent for harvested area in comparison to the previous year. That year, production of Colombian panela reached 1053.67 thousand metric tons.
