According to a survey conducted in May 2022, 19 percent of adults in the United States felt that if a social media platform went from being a public company to a private one, issues regarding the spread of misinformation were going to get much worse. Additionally, 16 percent of respondents felt that political debate was also going to be much worse in such a situation. The scenario has come up due to Elon Musk's interest in buying social media platform Twitter and making it a privately owned company.
