Brazil's emissions resulting from forestry, land-use, and land-use change are forecast at over 500 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (MtCO₂e) by 2050 under a scenario where the Forest Code is not implemented, whereas carbon sinks would stand around 53 MtCO₂e. This would keep Brazil's land-use sector as a net producer of emissions. On the other hand, if the Forest Code is implemented, land-use change emissions in the South American country are forecast to reach 117 MtCO₂e in 2050, and would be more than compensated by carbon sinks amounting to 155 MtCO₂e.
The Forest Code is a legislation that aims to protect the Amazon rainforest in Brazil. Firstly introduced in 1965, it restricts the area landowners in the Amazon can farm. The enforcement of the code has varied significantly over the years, depending on the government in place.
Forecast land-use emissions and sinks in Brazil from 2020 to 2050, by scenario
(in metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent)
This statistic shows a modelling of Brazil's emissions and sinks from land-use, landd-use change, and forestry, under two different scenarios: one with the implementation of the Forest Code, a legislation that aims to address the Amazon's deforestation, and the other where the Forest Code is not implemented.
Sink figures do not consider carbon removal from native forests, only from restoration and afforestation.
