The United Kingdom had 31,129 licensed plug-in commercial vehicles in its fleet in 2021. Most of the registrations were recorded in battery electric light goods vehicles and range-extended electric vehicles, amounting to approximately 28,300 and 1,300 licenses, respectively. In that year, there were only 520 battery-electric trucks and lorries.

These typically include battery-electric vehicles, which run exclusively on electricity, and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles, which can be charged using electric vehicle supply equipments but have traditional fuel reserves (petrol and diesel). Road vehicles would be expected to significantly use the public highway and to be used as a mode of transport.
