Relationship duration before engagement in Germany in 2024
In 2023, around 12.9 percent of people in Germany were together for three years before they got engaged. Only 4.6 percent of people were together for eight years before deciding to take the next step in their relationship.
Attitudes towards relationships
Relationships can start in many different ways, from a ‘meet-cute’ (a sweet first encounter that leads to falling in love), to meeting on dating apps or through friends. Around 60 percent of people in Germany said that they got with their first big love between the ages of 15 and 24 years old. A relatively new way for people to find a potential partner are dating apps. The rise of apps such as Tinder, Bumble, or Parship, has revolutionized the dating scene. Over 77 percent of people aged 16-to-29-years old in Germany said that they use online dating services.
Weddings bells?
Engagements are usually followed by a wedding, so the question remains, what is important to Germans when planning the big day? When it comes to weddings, the biggest topic is often finance and how much people are willing to spend. Some items on which Germans spent the most were wedding rings and the wedding dress. Around 17 percent of people spent between 200,1 and 2,500 on their wedding rings. When it comes to behavior at the nuptials, most people saw it as absolutely off-limits for the guests to wear a white dress. Most people also did not find it terribly outrageous to come to the wedding without a gift.
