Over 70 percent of the nuclear power outages due to extreme weather events between 1990 and 2019 occurred inland, the majority of them near a river. The remaining share of nuclear power plant failures happened by the coast. Over the whole period considered, nuclear power unavailability events resulted in less than 50 terawatt hours of electricity production losses due to extreme weather conditions.
In France, which has among the highest shares of nuclear power use worldwide, the impact of weather events on nuclear power plants resulted in 1,800 hours of total shutdowns.
