The number of nuclear power outages due to extreme weather events totaled almost 4,000 between 2009 and 2019. These occurrences, exacerbated by climate change, increased since the decade 1990-1999, when only 900 events were registered despite the fact that the number of nuclear power plants worldwide was roughly the same as in the 21st century. The reason for these nuclear power outages was the plant location and its proximity to lakes, rivers, and the sea.
In France, which is among the largest users of nuclear power, the impact of weather events on nuclear power plants resulted in 1,800 hours of total shutdowns of nuclear plants.
