Manufacturers use several high-value raw materials to produce smart phone components such as circuit boards, LCD displays, and batteries. For every one million smart phones recycled, some 35,274 pounds of copper, 772 pounds of silver, 75 pounds of gold, and 33 pounds of palladium can be recovered.
The value of raw materials found in e-waste can be worth billions of dollars. However, only a small amount of electronics are recycled globally, meaning vast sums of money are being thrown away.
