Russia was the leading country for district heating generated by nuclear power plants worldwide in 2021, with more than 1,000 gigawatt hours of electricity equivalent overall. Ukraine came second, with almost 600 gigawatt hours provided to district heating, mainly from the nuclear plant of Zaporizhzhia. In the European Union, only the countries of Bulgaria, Romania, Czechia, and Hungary used nuclear power for district heating in 2021.
District heating is one of the potential uses of nuclear energy. It is a low-carbon alternative to heat produced by fossil fuels burning that in 2020 were the source of almost 90 percent of total heat distributed through pipes.
Electrical energy equivalent supplied by nuclear power plants providing district heating worldwide in 2021*
(in gigawatt-hours)
* The electrical energy equivalent (in gigawatt hours) of the thermal energy (heat in gigacalories) produced by the nuclear power plants is calculated using the formula
"gigawatt hours = 1.16 *gigacalories* 0.3".
