The Soviet Union was the major power that produced the highest number of tanks and self-propelled guns during the Second World War. While tanks had been deployed for the first time ever in combat during the First World War, their role in the Second World War was integral to success on the battlefield. The technological advancements of the interwar period meant that the tanks used in WWII were much more durable, reliable, and powerful than their predecessors, however this varied greatly by country. For example, the Allies produced almost five times as many tanks as the Axis powers during the war, however roughly four of Allied tanks were lost for every one German tank.
