According to a survey conducted between 2019 and 2021 in India, the prevalence of hypertension increases sharply with age for both women and men. Women aged 55 years and above are slightly more prone to hypertension than men of the same age group.

An individual is classified as having hypertension if he/she has SBP ≥140 mmHg or DBP ≥90 mmHg at the time of the survey, or is currently taking medicine to lower her blood pressure.
