Almost all methane (CH₄) emissions from the agriculture and silviculture sector in France in 2023 were from livestock farming. Most of it came from cattle farming, namely from the enteric fermentation in ruminant animals and from their excrements. In comparison, farming, and machines used in agricultural activities contributed to a marginal share of CH₄ emissions. Agriculture has been the main contributor to annual CH₄ emissions in France since 1990.
