Gettr: cumulative downloads worldwide YTD 2024, by country

Micro-blogging platform Gettr registered more than 3.3 million lifetime downloads across all app stores in Brazil as of November 2024. The United States generated the second-highest number of lifetime downloads, with more than 32.6 million by the same period. In 2022, the platform saw a growth of 743 percent in new users based in the United Kingdom compared to the previous year, 320 percent in Australia, and 266 percent in Brazil. However, its download performance has dwindled ever since.

A bullhorn for right-wing politics…

With a design similar to Twitter, Gettr is an alt-tech microblogging platform that targets conservative and far-right audiences. Released on July 4th, 2021, by former Donald Trump aide Jason Miller, the platform was created after the former United States president was banned from most social media platforms after the events leading to the Capitol attacks on January 6, 2021. Branded as a "marketplace of ideas", discussions on Gettr revolve around common topics for the far-right political spectrum, although not as extreme as in other alt-tech platforms.

…and its resonance in Brazil

Despite its relatively low global reach, Gettr has found a niche in Brazil among supporters of former president Jair Messias Bolsonaro, showcasing the right-wing skew of the platform in an already polarized social media environment in the country. Ahead of Brazil’s 2022 election, the platform received little attention in comparison to mainstream networks, but found political resonance among the Bolsonaro supporters as a political propaganda tool.
