The annual greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in France were around 404 million metric tons of CO₂ equivalent in 2021, of which almost one third were from the transportation sector. After dropping to less than 400 million metric tons in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic, GHG emissions increased again in 2021 and 2022 but stayed below 2019 levels.
The GHG emission target for the period 2019-2023, as set by the National Low Carbon Strategy, was broadly achieved in 2020, 2021 and 2022.
