In Latin America and the Caribbean, the subregion with the largest central government social spending per capita is the Caribbean. There, the average public social spending reached 2,140 U.S. dollars per person in 2022, while it stood at 1,529 dollars in South America and 745 in the region comprised by Central America, Mexico and the Dominican Republic. While these two regions registered a lower spending than the Caribbean, the average has been steadily increasing during most of the past two decades.
