Hydrogen use in the European Union is set to rise considerably in accordance with the RePowerEU plan. Under this scheme meant to end the EU's reliance on Russian fossil fuels by 2030, the EU is expected to consume around 20 million metric tons of hydrogen in 2030. This is in comparison to a consumption of roughly seven million metric tons proposed under the European Commission's Fit for 55 plan, which predates RePowerEU.

REPowerEU is the European Commission's plan to end reliance on Russian fossil fuels by 2030. It was proposed in May 2022.
Fit for 55 is a package of policy initiatives aimed at reducing the European Union's net greenhouse gas emissions by 55 percent by 2030. The package was proposed in July 2021.
