Household energy costs as a share of gross disposable income in the European Union are forecast to reach 23 percent in 2023. This represents a nearly three-fold increase compared to 2021 and comes in the wake of supply disruptions following the Russia-Ukraine war. Energy prices have already increased significantly throughout 2022, with higher power and gas demand in the winter months likely to impact prices further.
