A total of nine nuclear facilities were active in Germany in April 2023, of which six were research reactors and three were facilities for nuclear fuel cycle. The permanent shut-down of the three nuclear power plants active in January 2022 was effective on April 15, 2023. Nuclear power plants produce electricity, research reactors produce neutrons used for scientific, medical, and industrial research and applications.
As of April 2023, 87 nuclear facilities had been shut-down in Germany, or were in the decommissioning process, or already dismantled.
