Share of radioactive waste to be stored in Belgium 2021, by level and origin

As of 2021, the nuclear industry accounted for 60 percent of the short-term management radioactivity waste to be stored in Belgium. Nuclear liabilities, indicating nuclear power plants that were out-of-service at the time of the survey, and other activities making use of radioactive materials made up another 36 percent of low-level waste. Long-term management waste of low- and intermediate-level of radioactivity were mainly produced by the latter sector, whereas 99 percent of the high-level waste originated in the nuclear industry. Less than five percent of the volume of radioactive waste to be stored in Belgium was issued by the academic and medical sector.
