In 2021, a survey was conducted in South Africa about the distribution of instant messaging applications among different living standard measurements (LSM). The findings show that Signal was the most commonly used instant messaging application for the LSM bracket 9-10 and had the highest overall rate among the different LSM brackets. Furthermore, Facebook messenger was the most popular for both LSM 7-8 and 3-6.
The LSM measure divides the population into 10 groups, 10 being the highest living standard level and one being the lowest. This tool categorizes people according to their living standards based on criteria such as ownership of major appliances. This is used as an instrument to identify target markets for the distribution of consumer goods in a given country.
