Result of the parliamentary election in Sweden 2022, by share of votes

In the parliamentary election in Sweden held in September 2022, the Social Democratic Party received the largest share of the votes, increasing their support by two percentage points compared to the previous election. However, as their cooperation partners in parliament (the Riksdag), the Left Party, the Centre Party, and the Green Party, did not receive enough seats in the legislature, the center-right block formed a government under leadership of the conservative Moderate Party.

Controversial right-wing party

Probably the most notable story resulting from the parliamentary election was the result of the Sweden Democrats. The right-wing, anti-immigrant party has split opinions in Sweden since it first entered parliament in 2010, and initially, the other established parties refused to co-operate with them. However, before the 2018 election, the center-right parties opened the door for co-operating with the controversial party. In the 2022 election, the party became the second largest in terms of votes received and seats in parliament, capitalizing on Swede's worries about rising gang-related crime.

High voter turnout

In the parliamentary election in 2018, as many as 87 percent of the eligible voters in Sweden casted their vote. This was one of the highest turnouts throughout the world in recent years. In 2022, the voter turnout sank by three percentage points, but was still exceptionally high compared to most other European countries.
