Global paper production was estimated to total 434 million tons in 2022, of which 249 million tons came from recycled, or recovered, papers. This made recovered papers the main raw material used in paper production worldwide that year. Recovered paper is paper and paperboard waste that has been collected for recycling. It is then processed by chemicals to remove ink and adhesives, then chopped into recovered paper pulp.
