Deforestation on indigenous lands in Brazil's Cerrado biome 2013-2023

The deforested area on indigenous lands in the Cerrado biome in Brazil amounted to 11 thousand square kilometers in 2023, an increase of almost 3 percent compared to the previous year. In the period of consideration, deforestation on indigenous lands in Cerrado fluctuated, with the absolute peak recorded in 2013, when deforestation surpassed 13 thousand square kilometers. Between 1985 and 2023, Cerrado's natural vegetation loss stood at roughly 27 percent, the second highest in the country.

The Cerrado biome encompasses the states of Goiás, Federal District, Minas Gerais, Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul, and Tocantins. It is a tropical savanna ecoregion with two prevailing seasons, wet and dry. The dry season is intense and lasts from roughly April to September, the southern winter months.
