Italy's final energy consumption from road transportation in 2020 was approximately 27 million metric tons of oil equivalent. This value was the lowest over the last 30 years, with road transportation typically consuming more than 30 million metric tons of oil equivalent per year. This decline in energy consumption was a result of the restrictions brought on by the outbreak of COVID-19. The largest amounts of energy consumed by road transportation since 1990 were in 2004 and 2007, at just above 39 million metric tons of oil equivalent.
Road transportation accounts for the largest share of energy consumption in Italy's transportation sector, followed by international aviation.
