In 2022, the year-on-year (YoY) change in the number of customers visiting pubs and izakaya in Japan stood at 61.9 percent. With the advent of the COVID-19 pandemic since 2020, the number of pub visits, and thus the revenue of pubs and izakaya, declined in an unprecedented manner. Although the figure recovered compared to the previous year, it was still catching up to pre-pandemic levels.
