The United States' total capacity for wood pulp for paper and paperboard in 2023 was 47.6 million metric tons (air dry). Of this total, almost nine million metric tons was for market pulp. Market pulp is produced by pulp mills and shipped to paper manufacturers that do not have their own pulp mills onsite. Non-market pulp is used by papermaking firms that have a pulp mill on site, so it can be used by within their own facilities to produce paper products.
