Four out of ten Russians had been abroad, according to a survey conducted in August 2022. The figure marked an increase from April 2018, when nearly one third of respondents reported having visited other countries. In order to travel abroad, Russian citizens had to obtain an international, or external, passport in addition to their internal one. Nearly 3.9 million external passports were issued to Russians in 2021. An external passport was valid for 5 or 10 years depending on the format.

The wording of original questions asked in 2018 and 2022 was slightly different. In 2018, it was the following: "Бывали ли Вы когда-нибудь за границей?"
In 2022, it was the following: "Доводилось ли Вам посещать следующие страны?" with the following answer options: "США, страны Западной Европы, страны Восточной Европы, любые другие страны."
