African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) implementations are expected to impact wages in Africa. Except in Southern Africa, women would be the leading beneficiaries compared to men. For instance, in Northern Africa, AfCFTA initiatives might cause an increase in women's wages by 15 percent in 2035, compared to 2022. In contrast, for men, the growth would reach about 13 percent. By comparison, earnings of unskilled laborers are expected to be higher than those of qualified workers in the same period.
According to the source, impacts on relative wages are usually due to changes in the makeup of output caused by policy reforms. In May 2019, the AfCFTA agreement officially entered into force after 22 African countries had ratified it. The agreement sought to boost inter-regional trade.
