Initiatives emanating from the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) agreement are expected to affect unskilled labor wages in Africa. For instance, unskilled labor wages in East Africa are expected to increase by 13 percent in 2035, compared to 2022. This would be the highest impact on the continent, followed by Central and Southern Africa with 12 percent each. According to the source, impacts on relative wages are usually due to changes in the makeup of output caused by policy reforms. In May 2019, the AfCFTA agreement officially entered into force after 22 African countries had ratified it. The agreement sought to boost inter-regional trade.
