As of the beginning of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) implementation in 2020, unskilled workers in Sub-Saharan Africa added up to around 289 million. Unskilled male employees in the region outnumbered the uneducated women workers. By 2035, the total skilled labor is expected to increase by roughly 45 percent. In May 2019, the AfCFTA agreement officially entered into force after 22 African countries had ratified it.
