In the last 40 years, the Cerrado biome has seen the greatest share of wildfire occurrences in Brazil. Between 1985 and 2020, around 1.7 million square kilometers caught fire at least once in the country, out of which, 43.9 percent was in Cerrado. Combined with the Amazon, the two biomes accounted for some 85 percent of wildfire areas in Brazil.
