Between 1985 and 2021, 23 out of 27 states in Brazil increased their anthropic occupied area, meaning that these states saw a decrease on their natural coverage area. By comparison, only the state of Rio de Janeiro decreased its anthropic occupation, gaining two percent of natural coverage in the period in consideration. The states of Espírito Santo, Amapá, and São Paulo remained stable.
Anthropic occupation designates the land occupied and modified by human activities to fulfill their basic needs. It can be areas that were transformed into urban settlements, as well as areas that were explored to retrieve minerals, goods, fuels, and others, therefore negatively impacting the environment.
