By October 2021, a cumulative total of 336 civil partnerships were registered in Osaka city. This was followed by Yokohama city which recorded 213 registrations. Japan does not allow same-sex marriage. Some local governments, instead, introduced same-sex partnership systems that grant certain rights to registered couples. A number of prefectures introduced civil partnership systems on the prefectural level.
