EU ETS aviation allowances freely allocated, auctioned, or sold 2012-2023
The volume of freely allocated allowances for the aviation industry (EUAAs) issued under the European Union Emissions Trading System (EU ETS) totaled 22.5 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (MtCO₂e) in 2023. The volume of freely allocated EUAAs have fallen considerably since the aviation industry was first included in the EU ETS in 2012. One allowance – or carbon credit – gives the holder the right to emit one metric ton of carbon dioxide or its equivalent.
