In a 2021 survey of mobile network operators (MNOs) and device manufacturers, almost 90 percent of MNOs answered that they were planning to offer or adopt embedded SIMs, or eSIMs, by 2025. Over 80 percent of manufacturers also planned to adopt eSIMs by 2025, yet about 18 percent of manufacturers answered that they "didn't know" whether they would adopt eSIMs, compared to less than ten percent of operators who indicated the same uncertainty. Embedded SIMs work by installing eSIM hardware during the manufacturing stage, thereby enabling the device to host multiple MNO profiles instead of switching between individual SIM cards.
