Apulia is the Italian region with the largest area covered by photovoltaic power plants. As of 2021, around 30 percent of the national land-based solar energy plants are located there. The land use of land-based solar plants is over 10 square kilometers in Lazio, Sicily and Emilia-Romagna, while no photovoltaic system is located on the surface of the autonomous provinces of Trento and Bolzano and the regions of Liguria and Aosta Valley.
The electricity production from solar plants in Italy reached almost 25,500 gigawatts hours in 2021.
