A survey held at the end of 2021 found that that 47 percent of news industry leaders believed that journalism increasingly super-serves wealthier and more educated audiences, whereas just 28 percent disagreed. Whilst subscriptions were deemed to be the most important revenue stream for publishers in 2022, there were concerns that the subscription model alienates certain consumers and benefits others, and advocates for open journalism remained unconvinced about encouraging their audiences to subscribe to access their content.
